They go together

Funny songs aren't easy - I like to include a few in my set, and I found that I needed a new one, but I was really struggling. Sometimes, funny things don't make for funny songs. I wanted to write something for my Mum and Dad's wedding anniversary, but so often those songs are so personal you can never sing them again. I'd written a few songs like that, so I thought I'd write something that had a wider application.

I had the thought that my mum and dad "go together" (because they do), and so I thought it would be fun to compare them to all sorts of other things which also go together. I put out a call on Twitter for things that go together (without saying what the song would eventually be about). Some of these were quite disturbing, but some made it into the song.

My favourites are the things that take you by surprise like "body odour and a poor standard of personal hygiene", which do go together, as you might expect (I speak from experience).

Muscially, this was a fun one again. Some tasty chords to play jazz guitar over, and the one use of the windchimes on the album (Terl didn't say he was going to do it, but he just played it as the click was coming in, but it's perfect). There is a touch of Flight of the Conchords on this track, and that can be no bad thing!

I like the look on young people's faces when I sing "Tom and Barbara, Simon and Garfunkel, Torvill and Dean" - they haven't got a clue what I'm on about. I think I might be getting old.

You can go here for downloads and here for CD orders (including CD bundles) if you'd like a copy of the new album.

When I first heard Paul Bell I was captivated. And I still am.
